The file itself is a bit large, but now I can finally keep everything in one place!
5e Forgotten Realms Adventures
Waterdeep
GM’s Note: The City is a lot different than previous editions. I’m still wrapping my head around what the city is so you guys can visit the city and get some consistency from me. Parts of the city are still in ruins, the political structure is a bit different, people are a bit desperate and trade still flourishes. Even with all the changes the city is relatively safe if you know where to avoid and is still in the process of healing from the Spellplague.
Trollskull Alley On Map Of Waterdeep
The City of Splendors is certainly one of the greatest of the Sword Coast cities and perhaps the greatest cities on the face of the world. It’s home to as many as two million people, though an accurate census is all but impossible since so many come and go, visiting the open city to trade and otherwise seek fame and fortune. Waterdeep is a stable and generally peaceful city, where the rule of law is enforced by a huge and well-equipped watch further backed up by some of the most powerful personalities in the Realms.

Still, there are parts of Waterdeep that can be dangerous for the unwary, and the rough-and-tumble Dock Ward is one of those parts.
DOCKSTREET
Running the length of Waterdeep Harbor, this infamous lane is always crowded with strangers to the city just off he many ships that dock there.

WATERDEEPHARBOR
The busy harbor is protected by enormous gated sea walls above the surface and by a cadre of merfolk beneath it. It is known all over the world as the safest of harbors, with the finest repair facilities for ships across Faerûn and with everything a merchant captain needs—from storehouses and marketplaces to myriad inns, festhalls, and taverns for the entertainment of the crew.
Population: 200,000 – 2,000,000 (I’m getting different information, so a lot of people.)
- They’re rebuilding the High Road between Baldur’s Gate and Neverwinter, so that should bring more trade South.
- An additional two wards have been set up in Fieldward in the north between the two city walls and the mistshore (which used to be the old naval docks).
- The waterdeep navy is scuttled.
- The griffon rider forces are gone.
- Skullport was taken by the drow.
- A large underground “city” for gnomes and halflings has grown “the warrens”.
- The guilds were responsible for some killings of the open lords and not trusted anymore.
- The nobles have been greatly reduced and are much less powerful.
- Mountainside is a newer more wealthy area being build up the side of Mt Waterdeep.

- The city watch and city guard are now one force.
- Open Lord in 4e: > The 4e Open Lord of Waterdeep, Dagult “Dagger” Neverember, is a hard-drinking, eloquent, and impressive lion of a man. Tall, broad-shouldered, and forceful, he is a master manipulator and looks the part of a strong ruler; he was chosen to be Open Lord for this reason. Neverember is one of the richest men in Waterdeep. He prefers straight dealing to intrigue and genuinely wants to do what’s best for the city. In 5e the Open Lord is now Laeral Silverhand.
- Blackstaff: > The Archmage of Waterdeep and current Mistress of Blackstaff Tower, Vajra Safhar, is a thin, small, dusky-skinned Tethyrian. Vajra assumed the role of Blackstaff earlier this year following the death of her popular predecessor and lover, Samark. The young Blackstaff dwells alone in Blackstaff Tower and commands what’s left of the Watchful Order of Magists & Protectors.
- During the spellplauge many of the statues of waterdeep became animated and crashed through the city godzilla-style. Some still lay were they fell.
- Glowing orbs of light are commonly seen around the city now, they are a mystery and are attached to magic and seem to become attached to certain people as they travel around.
- Detection and location magic does not work in the city.
- Halaster (the evil mage of undermountain) is dead and his tunnels are wilder than ever.
- The upper most levels of undermountain are now known as Downshadow, a neighborhood of sorts for people dealing in shading acts and illicit goods.
